The National Institute of Design (NID) has invited applications for admission to the Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD) and Post-Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (PGDPD), offered by it. The 4-year Professional UG Programme is offered in the following areas of specialization at the Main Campus, Ahmedabad.
(i) Product Design, Furniture & Interior Design, Ceramic & Glass Design under the Faculty Of Industrial Design.
(ii) Graphic Design, Animation Film Design, Film & Video Communication, Exhibition (Spatial) Design under the Faculty of Communication Design.
(iii) Textile Design under the Faculty of Textile, Apparel and Lifestyle Accessory Design.
The approximate number of seats available for is 100, which is inclusive of the seats for reserved categories.
The Graduate Diploma Programme in Design commences with a 2-semester rigorous Foundation Programme followed by 3 years of specialised studies in any of the disciplines offered in GDPD. The medium of instruction at NID is English.
Allotment of the discipline of candidate’s choice at the end of Foundation year is not guaranteed. Discipline allotment at the end of the 1st year (Foundation Programme), is based purely on performance of the student in the Foundation Programme and the number of seats available in desired discipline.
The Foundation Programme aims at developing values, attitudes, sensorial skills and aesthetic sensitivity necessary for specialisation in design. It introduces students to the fundamentals of design and orients students to thinking of design as a creative problem solving process. It helps develop an evolved ‘design’ perception and attitude, understanding of multidisciplinary nature of design and relationship of design with environment, culture, human senses and emotions. Basic design ‘studio’ courses are augmented by introductory studies in Science and Liberal Arts, to develop world view and understanding of Indian milieu. It helps enrich conceptual thinking, insight for design concerns; design processes and prepares one to start thinking about eventual solutions. It aspires to create an awareness of the changing environment by constantly relating the students’ learning to real life situations. It provides the necessary direction, stimuli, facilities and experience to foster creativity and thereby help each individual to discover their own identity and potential. The Foundation Programme is the basis on which the remaining design curriculum is built.

Eligibility for GDPD: Applicant should have passed or should be appearing for the qualifying examination under the Higher Secondary (10+2) or equivalents like AISSCE/ IB/ ISC. In case of appearing candidates, admission will be subject to their getting qualified. Upper age limit for candidates is 20 years as on June 1, 2012, which is relaxable by 3 years for reserved categories.
The Post-Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (PGDPD) is a 2 to 2½ year programme offered in the following specific areas of sectoral specialisation in 17 Design programmes under the five faculties, with approximately 245 seats (Includes reserved categories).
Eligibility for PGDPD: Applicant should have a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent. Those who will be appearing for the qualifying examinations in the areas mentioned against each discipline are eligible to apply. One can apply for a maximum of two PG Programmes. Those applying for two programmes should send separate application form for each programme. The medium of instruction for PG Programme at NID is English. Upper age limit for candidates is 30 years (relaxable by 3 years for reserved categories) as on June 1, 2011.The programmes offered in different campuses are as follows.

The applicant should also send in an attested copy of the relevant certificate from competent authority and a self addressed envelope of size, 9” x 12”, with stamps worth Rs.40/- affixed. The envelope should be marked with ‘NID ADMISSIONS 2012’.
Reserved category candidates must attach relevant certificates of Caste/Category as per the Government of India rules/format, failing which, the application form will not be provided / will be rejected. OBC (Other Backward Class) candidates are required to submit Non-Creamy Layer certificate from Collectorate. PH (Physically Handicapped) candidates are required to submit certificate from the Chief Medical Officer (minimum 40% disability).
The last date for receiving the completed application forms at NID is November 21, 2011.
Selection: Admissions are based on two phase selection, The first phase is the Design Aptitude Test (DAT) which will be conducted at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Nagpur. All candidates fulfilling the requirements of minimum qualification and falling within the prescribed age limit will be called for the Design Aptitude Test (PGDPD or GDPD).
The Design Aptitude Test for GDPD will be held on January 7, 2012 (Saturday) and that for PGDPD, on January 8, 2012 (Sunday).

Based on the scores obtained in these tests, candidates will be shortlisted and called for the second phase. The second phase of the admission procedure will consist of studio tests followed by personal interviews at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Gandhinagar.

All those candidates called for the second phase are required to attend the studio tests and interview, which completes the process of selection.
