Contract Research and Services Scheme (CRS)

DBT-BIRAP invites proposals under CRS to facilitate Academia-Industry interaction

Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Programme (BIRAP), is a programme of the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, with an objective to facilitate innovative research. DBT-BIRAP now endeavours to extend its support to Academia in the form of grant-inaid for validation of the Proof of Concept (PoC) by an Industrial partner. The CRS scheme would support the academia-industry interaction between research institutes, universities, public funded research laboratories, governmental organizations, research foundations and companies / industries under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode.
Under this, Public Sector Research Institutes, Universities who have already generated or have pre-existing scientifically established proof of concept/leads could seek support for specific research and validation process to be performed by a company partners within a defined time frame. The industry partner in turn would complete the Validation Phase in a Contract Research mode.
In addition, if the Academic group requires some specific services from the industry such as toxicology, sequencing, use of specific equipment etc. these could also be supported under this scheme.


Who can Apply?
Public and/or Private Universities and Research Institutions can
apply under the Contract Research and Services Scheme with
pre-determined company partner(s) having DSIR recognized R&D/
Service unit(s).
For Contract Research, available leads should be at a level which
provides sufficient data for Scale up/Validation and may fall under the
following categories but not limited to:

I. Exploratory validation of technology
II. Small scale contract research resulting in generating several batches of process or multiple prototypes
III. Large scale validation of prototype to commercial design
For Contract Services there should be a clear justification for services
to be outsourced.

Eligibility criteria
a) for primary applicant (academia)
Public and/or Private Universities and Research Institutions having
a well established research support system, for basic or applied research are eligible under this scheme. The Research group should
necessarily have an established lead (as evidenced by scientific data)
ready for validation / outsourced services.
b) for collaborating company(ies)
Only lndian Company(ies), registered under the lndian Companies Act
1956 and in which more than 51% of the ownership is held by lndian
Citizens (including NRls) and having DSIR* recognised in-house R&D
unit, which is interested to perform such a contract research service
with academic partner.

(*Companies in the process of obtaining DSIR recognition may also apply
along with the proof of application to DSIR. However, the final decision on such
applications would be subject to their getting DSIR recognition)

Modalities of Funding
The academia / public sector will be given grant-in-aid for the research
component (if any) required for the validation at their site as well as for
the validation and contract research/contract service component(s) to
be outsourced to the collaborating company(ies)

How to Apply?
Proposals are required to be submitted online only. To submit a proposal online, the Institutions need to register with BIRAP through “Institution User Registration”. Detailed guidelines on how to submit the
proposal will be available online. www.birapdbt.nic.in

Institution User Registration and Online Proposal Submission would begin from 16th January, 2012.

No Hard Copy to be submitted, Proposals submitted online only would be considered.

Last date for Submission of Proposals: 29th February, 2012

Applications have been invited by Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Jakkur, Bangalore, from teachers with BSc / MSc with or without BEd qualification as well as from individuals who have BSc / MSc qualification interested in science education for admission to Post Graduate Diploma in Science Education of Year 2012.

The training will be imparted through projects and formal courses. The programme is for two semesters beginning from 1 August 2012. A stipend of Rs. 10,000/- per month will be paid to those selected for the programme.
